For mine and my now wife's first holiday we went to Lake Garda in Italy. Lake Garda itself sits to the north of the country between Verona and Milan. There are a number of lovely town around the lake, with the towns further north generally more beautiful. We stayed for the week in Limone, on the west side of the lake. Which was a lovely little town with a nice waterfront and even a public beach. Many romantic walks, romantic meals and romantic sites can be found, and depending on how far you wish to travel there is plenty to see in the surrounding areas.

I would recommend visits to Malcesine, Bardolino, Sirmione and Garda.
