Buy some gingerbread mix from a local supermarket. (Do this instead of making your own, because this way it doesn't matter how much the children mess around with it, it still turns out okay).
Then, when that's ready, get lots of Christmassy cake cutters like trees and teddies and Santa's faces. Cut a hole at the top of the shape for the ribbon to go through later.
Put them in the oven and let them cook, then decorate them with icing and let them set. Once set, put a short piece of ribbon through the hole and hang them on the tree.
